Steering wheel controls: this kit keeps the basic buttons that use simple wiring such as volume and next or previous track. The other buttons, like the phone and menu controls, won’t work because those rely on a CANBUS computer signal that this harness does not use. If you install the controller dial, it becomes the main communication system for the head unit and takes the place of CANBUS, so a CANBUS module cannot be added. This kit includes an optional rotary controller (Mazda Commander Control) designed to replicate the factory-style setup found in higher-trim Mazda 3 models.
Vehicles that came with only the basic radio will have a small storage pocket in the centre console — this is where the controller can be fitted if desired.
The controller is not required for operation. The head unit works perfectly with the touchscreen and some steering wheel controls alone.
If you wish to install the controller, it mounts neatly in place of the storage pocket and connects via a dedicated cable supplied in the kit. However, installation requires partial disassembly of the centre console to run the cable between the screen and the controller, which is detailed in the installation guide.
If you prefer a quicker install, simply leave the controller out — the system remains fully plug-and-play using your vehicle’s existing radio connectors.
